Let's talk labor! Feeling a blend of excitement, nerves, and everything in between about that big moment? That’s completely normal! At Atelier Melon, we’re here to support you every step of the way. So let's get into the subject of birth courses. We believe in two things: first, that knowledge and preparation can make a big difference, and second; that you’ve got this! We've asked the team of Mom & co to answer some frequently asked questions about birth courses, so you can decide what feels best for you. Let’s go!
In short - what do you learn during a birth course?
"This varies per course, but generally speaking you learn about the entire birthing process. What happens physiologically? What are different possible scenarios? A course will teach you tools on how to deal with what's gonna happen. What do these scenarios mean for you, and what can you do to support yourself?"
When is the best time to book and take a birth course?
"It's wise to start planning your preparation after the first semester, and to take the course around week 30. By then, it's (hopefully) not too physically demanding to attend a session - or a few evenings of classes - and it's close enough to your due date to put everything into action."
How do I pick the right course for me?
"There are many ways to take a pregnancy or birth course. You can find lots of online methods - either through an online connection, or to follow in your own pace via a platform. Than there's also group courses where you attend in-person lessons with an instructor, and meet other expectant parents as well. Your choice depends fully on what's available in your area, and on your own preferences. Do you prefer the flexibility of an online course, or the dynamics and connection during a group setting? At Mom & Co, we also offer both online and in-person classes. All our courses are taught by midwives, and we combine practical, physical information with elements of hypnobirthing and mindfulness techniques. This gives you the perfect balance between knowledge and skills - such as relaxation exercises and visualization tools - to help you feel empowered and ready for birth."
Should I bring my partner to the classes?
"Absolutely! Whether it's your romantic partner, or a friend or family member who will be supporting you during the birth - we believe this person plays a crucial role in providing support throughout this journey."
You can never control how labor goes - so why take a course anyway?
"It's true, you never know exactly how labor will unfold. However, preparing for different scenarios and understanding how the ways to handle them can contribute to a positive birth experience. Learning about potential (medical) situations and their consequences, as well as practicing breathing techniques can both make a big difference."
I'm afraid of giving birth - how can a course help me?
"By equipping yourself with knowledge, techniques and tools, you'll approach birth with more confidence and less fear - that's something we strongly believe in. A course helps you understand the process, prepares you for different scenarios, and ensures that you have a supportive partner who knows what to do, what your preferences are, and which questions to ask."
I already know I'll have a planned C-section - is a course still useful?
"Yes! A C-section is a major surgery and can be an intense experience, but preparing for it can make a big difference. Learning about the process, asking the right questions, and using relaxation techniques from a birthing course can help you feel calm and in control."
This is not my first pregnancy - is it still worth taking a course?
"Even if you've been trough it before, a course can still be helpful. You might already know some of the information, and parts of it may feel repetitive, but - based on your previous experience(s) - you may have some new questions, or you may want to prepare differently. A course can help you refresh your knowledge, prepare in a more focused way, and perhaps it may even teach you something new."
My due date is nearing, and I've already taken a course - any last moment advice?
"Trust your body and your intuition. You've got this! And never be afraid to ask the important questions."
